Life is about choices... Why should fitness be any different?

Increasing Your Aerobic Fitness

Aerobic fitness is having an adequate amount of oxygen delivered to your muscles so you can keep doing what you are doing. Better aerobic fitness comes from raising your heart rate for a longer period of time. Most people who exercise have a fairly high level of aerobic fitness. They have a higher level of stamina than people who exercise a little or not at all. The fact is, however, there are ways to increase your aerobic fitness, especially with the use of cross-training.

Why Exercise? The reason you exercise is to increase your aerobic fitness. You probably also exercise because you enjoy the benefits that come with it, as well. You know, things like fitting into expensive, sexy clothes, being able to beat everyone else at the backyard badminton game, and knowing how to power shop in the grocery produce aisle. No really, there are tons of benefits, including better heart health, a higher energy level, and lots of muscle endurance that you can use to your benefit. Not to mention that people who exercise regularly generally feel better about themselves and are more likely to have a more positive outlook on life. Work Those Other Muscle Groups! But did you know that doing a bit of cross-training can really increase your overall aerobic fitness? Cross-training is simply trying some other form of exercise. When you do the same type of exercise all the time, you end up working the same groups of muscles over and over. For example, if you are an experienced runner, you work those leg muscles into perfection. But how toned are your arms? Taking on some other type of exercise such as spending some time on a rowing machine or even cycling will work a whole other set of muscle groups. (You might even find muscles you forgot you had)! Give It A Rest! It will also give those muscles you use the most a rest. Muscle groups that are overused can be prone to injury. Even when you are careful not to over strain your body, doing the same thing over and over again can still lead to injury. Injuries are something that no one wants! That is just another convincing reason to try out cross-training to increase your aerobic fitness. Avoiding the Dreaded Exercise Monotony Perhaps there is an even more important reason to try out other forms of exercise. It is fun! Avoiding monotony by trying something new is truly the best way to keep your enthusiasm for the types of exercise you personally enjoy and for exercise in general. Getting bored can really put a dent in your exercise routine. Check out our exercise routine section for ideas on how to spice up your routine. If you don't look forward to exercising, chances are good that you will find ways to avoid it. Add a little spice to your exercise routine and see what happens! Not only will you work out other muscle groups and rest the muscles you typically use the most you might just find that you have discovered a new exercise passion to indulge in.
