This, to my mind, is the most fulfilling benefit of mountain running. I get to see things that others might never see, all while indulging in my favorite sport, which is running. Here are some tips to help you have a good mountain running experience. Mountain running is appropriate for beginners to advanced runners. You simply have to adjust to your own specific needs in order to get the kind of workout you need. Start off with a comfortable pace. Don’t go too fast too quickly, because especially if it is a new trail, you might have only a vague idea of the kind of terrain you will encounter. Plus, running uphill does catch up with you quicker than you might think! If you must slow down and walk, slow down gradually instead of immediately because quick increases and decreases use up more energy than gradual pace changes. Train at higher altitudes. If you are thinking about doing mountain running competitively, you will want to train at places that offer you good altitudes. Running at high altitudes trains your body to adjust to the thinner atmosphere, and your body learns to do it automatically. Watch your posture. When you are running uphill, you want to keep your rear in line with the rest of your body and avoid leaning too far forward. When running downhill, leaning forward a bit will help you move faster. You want to be basically perpendicular to the ground. If you find you need to slow down, cut your stride length. Introducing variety into your mountain running workout is a great way to keep it fun. Try running at night, in the rain, or end your run with some type of drill that you make up, such as skipping or jumping. Instead of always being so intensely concentrated on your run, take a moment to relax and enjoy the nature around you. After all, that is probably one of the reasons you go into mountain running in the first place, which is to be surrounded by natural beauty. Don't forget to stop and enjoy it! Above all, listen to your body and stay hydrated. Know where you are going, and go with friends. Let someone know where you are going and when you should be back. Take a cell phone with you in case of an emergency. It is much easier for rescue personnel to find you with a cell signal than to search endless stretches of wilderness for you if you have an accident and can't get out on your own.
